Welcome to the School of Philosophy.

When was the last time YOUR life felt so simple?
When people think of philosophy, they usually think of something academic and purely intellectual.
The courses offered by the School of Philosophy are not an academic exercise. The Introductory Course consists of twelve practical sessions on the question of the philosophy of unity. Material is drawn from a variety of traditions, and each session involves the full participation of students. No prior knowledge or training is necessary.
The course also explores fundamental Platonic teachings on love and beauty, the changeable and the eternal and suggests ways of determining their practical value. It has been said that all of Western philosophy is a footnote to Plato. How can this philosophy help our understanding of ourselves, our nature and that of the universe we inhabit?
Instrumental to the development of practical philosophy is an examination of Advaita (the philosophy of unity) and its influence on Western ideas. This philosophy contrasts an inner being which does not change with our experience of constant change and the duality of everyday experience. With the aid of acute attention and a clear observation of this phenomenon the opportunity exists to free ourselves from these shifting states of the mind.
In the process we are able to recognise the components of mind, their functions and the value of detachment. The power of this observation transforms the common state of separation leading to the discovery of a unity within and outside one’s self. The realisation of this unity in daily life is the basis of clear thought and effective action. This is philosophy in practice – wisdom in action.
